What Are the Online Poker Rules?

The rules of Texas Hold'em are pretty straightforward. You’ll just need to memorize how the game is dealt and the different possible combinations you can hold. Beyond that, it gets complicated as the betting is where you’ll need to understand deep strategies.
Summary
Before we talk about strategy, let’s look at the hand combinations and how the game is dealt. The possible combinations in Hold'em are, listed from best to worst, as follows:
  • Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit
  • Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
  • Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same value 5, 5, 5, 5
  • Full House: Three of a kind plus a pair 2, 2, 2, 4, 4
  • Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence
  • Straight: Five consecutive cards of different suits 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
  • Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same value 8, 8, 8
  • Two Pair: Two pairs of cards Q, Q, 2, 2
  • Pair: and two cards that match 4, 4
  • Card high. This means that if you don’t have any of the above combinations, your best card is the highest card in your 5 cards. For example, Ace high.

In Hold’em, there needs to be a dealer and at least two players. Most games have a limit of 10 players per table.

The blinds
  • Blinds are like an ante, it’s the money you put in before the game starts to play a hand. In Hold’em, not every player puts in an “Ante.” There are only two people who put in money before the game starts.
  • The small blind: this is the player who is just left of the dealer. Say the small blind is $1. In most cases, the “dealer” is a button that moves around the table so people know where the big and small blinds are.
  • The big blind: this is the player who sits just to the left of the small blind. The big blind is always double the small blind. So, in this case, $2.
The Deal and first round of bets
  • Every player receives two cards, face down. It’s very important that when you look at your cards, other players don’t see them. This isn’t an issue playing online.
  • A round of bets now starts. To play, you have to at least put in the amount of the big blind. Other players can fold or raise money of any amount over the big blind.
  • Once everyone has had a chance to bet or fold, the dealer deals 3 cards in the middle of the table face up.
Round 2 of bet
  • The dealer now deals 3 cards in the middle of the table. These cards are called community cards. All players use these cards to make the best 5-card hand. Now there are 5 cards in play. The two cards that you have and the 3 community cards. These 3 cards are called the “flop.”
  • All players bet again on what they have or what they think they may have when all of the cards are dealt.
Round 3 of bets
  • The dealer now deals a fourth card in the middle of the table. Now there are 6 cards in play. Your 2 cards and the 4 community cards. The fourth card dealt is the “turn.”
  • All players now have an opportunity to bet again.
Final round of bets
  • The dealer then deals the last card, a fifth card called the “river.”
  • Now there are 7 cards in play. Your 2 cards and the 5 community cards.
  • All players must use their 2 cards and any 3 of the community cards to make the best 5-card combination they can.
After all the cards are on the table, and the people who have not folded show their cards, the highest combination wins the pot. Then the dealer button moves to the left. And the two players to the left of that now become the small and big blinds. And keep in mind, we still need to talk about strategy. For now, let’s take a look at common types of the free poker games available.
