• You aren’t trying to have the best hand. You win by ending each hand holding certain cards.
• You play alone. There isn’t even a dealer like Blackjack.
• There is a minimum hand value that you need to reach in order to win. Unlike playing with friends, where you can win a hand with Ace high.

Keep in mind that different types of games may have different rules. We’ll go over the most popular version after taking a look at the card combination and how poker is played in general.

• Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit
• Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
• Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same value 5, 5, 5, 5
• Full House: Three of a kind plus a pair 2, 2, 2, 4, 4
• Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence
• Straight: Five consecutive cards of different suits 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
• Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same value 8, 8, 8
• Two Pair: Two pairs of cards Q, Q, 2, 2
• Pair (usually Jacks or Better): Two cards of the same value, typically Jacks or higher

In most games, you’ll need a pair of Jacks or better to win anything at all. It becomes more and more difficult to end a hand with one of the winning combinations as you go up the list. However, the higher you are on the list, the more money you’ll receive for ending the hand with that winning combination.

• You’ll receive 5 cards face up. This is usually done by hitting the “Deal” button. As you are playing alone, it doesn’t matter that your cards are visible.
• After receiving your cards, you have two options. Keep all of your cards and end the hand right away or select which cards to discard.
• End the hand right away: this is usually done by clicking “hold” on each card. You’ll only want to do this if you have a winning hand that uses all 5 cards. For example, a full house. If you have a full house, you don’t want to select any cards to discard.
• Discard cards: This can be done by clicking the “draw” button. You’ll want to select cards to discard that you want to switch with another card. That means you can give away up to 4 cards and receive up to 4 new cards. You’ll want to do that to try to get a winning combination or increase the value of the winning hand. If you have three 3s, you may want to either discard 2 cards to increase your chances of getting a four-of-a-kind or discard 1 card to try to get a full house. The choice is yours.
• After you select the cards you want to discard, you’ll receive the same number of new cards that you discarded. At this point, there is nothing more you can do and the game is over.
